DESCRIPTION:   \nExhibition Title:\nSomewhere, Else\n \nArtist Statement:\nI grew up in the Chicago suburbs, and as an artist I became interested in what exists beneath and between seemingly “normal” facades. I am also fascinated with how the history of landscape painting presents opposing forces, from presence and absence to the idyllic and mysterious. For this body of work, I am led by the materiality of drawing as a way to reconcile contradictions in today’s landscape by repeated observations over time.\n \nMy drawings begin with what I encounter on walks, mostly when I’m looking around for birds and peering through curious gaps in my immediate surroundings. Like birding, drawing provides refuge for my mind and allows for deeper observation. Working on paper has fulfilled a need for immediacy, reflection, and the pleasures of mark-making. I start a work knowing the initial idea is negotiable because the process of making always leads me somewhere else.\n \nBio:\nKatherine Perryman has lived in Chicago for over 15 years and has exhibited her work in Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Seattle, and New York City. Perryman’s exhibition record includes The Learning Machine, Roman Susan Gallery, Zhou B Art Center, and Hoofprint Editions in Chicago. Currently Perryman is concentrating on her studio practice and continues advocacy for local wildlife and urban green space through education and volunteer work. Perryman has taught visual art at the college and high school level and worked as a domestic and international admissions counselor for a combined ten years.
